Solving Social & Behavior Problems in Autism

Once we identify the visual learning strengths of students with autism and related special learning needs, our goal is to use visual strategies to help them achieve success as they participate in their life opportunities.

Capitalizing on their strengths, using visual strategies alters many social, communication, and behavior situations. 

This program will identify a variety of behavior and social challenges common for this population. Then we will demonstrate effective ways to use a range of low tech pictures to high tech visual tools, including video and tablets like iPads and Apps, to improve communication, reduce behavior situations and help students participate successfully in social and life situations.

Visual strategies work for a wide range of ages and skill levels. This program will define the need, discuss training, and demonstrate many practical ideas for school, home and community.

Participant Objectives

Participants will learn to:

• Recognize situations where communication breakdowns can affect the student’s behavior and participation in social opportunities.
• Use the Guide for Assessing Behavior Situations to informally identify causes of behavior and social problems
• Identify uses for a range of low tech to high tech tools such as iPads, apps and video for helping students achieve independence and success in their life routines and experiences
